YUNOEKI OYU by Kengo Kuma & Associates

Kengo Kuma & Associates designed “Yunoeki Oyu” in Kazuno, Akita. Press release: Oyu onsen is a famous hot spring in Kazuno, Akita. We designed a community center here incorporating a shop, café, open-air theater, park, footbath, and biotope under one large roof. In order to create a dynamic space which varies according to the diverse programs, we referred to mage wappa, a round lunch basket made of thin wood, a traditional craft in Akita’s. Cylinders of LVL (laminated veneer lumber) reference mage wappa and comprise the structure of the building. Tokyo Signs – Products inspired by the streets of Tokyo

Tokyo Signs is a project run by members of Bento Graphics Inc., a Tokyo-based design and web development studio. They have released products inspired by the streets of Tokyo, and they are available here. “Our aim is to capture everything we encounter in the Japanese streetscape: roadmarks, signage, advertising, traffic signs, storefronts, sign boards, neon lights, street art and everything in-between”

Kengo Kuma’s V&A museum construction update

Japanese eyewear brand JINS collaborated with Jasper Morrison

Japanese eyewear brand JINS collaborated with British designer Jasper Morrison. The project is titled “JINS BASIC”, and there are four types available. The concept is to create “the ultimate normal forms”. This is the first time that Jasper Morrison designed glass frames.

Furniture exhibition by Rei Kawakubo

Japanese fashion designer Rei Kawakubo, founder of Comme des Garçons, designed pieces of furniture, and they have been exhibited at A1043, art gallery in Paris. The fifteen pieces of furniture will be exhibited at the gallery until December 22, 2017.

Pop Up Animal by Yu Matsuda

Yu Matsuda designed “Pop Up Animal” for Japanese stationery brand +d. What is special about this product is the material. It is called “cALoth” combined with cloth and aluminum. It was invented by Matsuda. You can create your own “art work” by folding the material as you wish.

SANAA’s port terminal building for Naoshima island

SANAA has built a passenger terminal shaped like bubbles for a port on the Japanese island of Naoshima, well-known for its contemporary art scene. It is composed of 13 large plastic balls which are illuminated at night. SANAA has also built “Marine Station Naoshima” on the same island. A bike parking pavilion designed by Sanna Architects at Naoshima Island. Constructed using Timber and Fibreglass.
