Japan Package Design Awards 2011
Award winning package designs from “Japan Package Design Awards 2011” have been exhibited at Matsuya, a department store in Ginza, Tokyo. The grand prix has been awarded to “Zenkashoin”, a pastry store in Kyoto. Package designs of “Zenkashoin” Package designs for chewing gums “Fit’s” received “Silver Award” Package design for Elecom’s headphones also received “Silver Award”

Transparent Japanese Tea House by Yoshioka
Japanese designer Yoshioka Tokujin will present a transparent Japanese tea house “Kou-an” at Glasstress 2011 in Venice, Italy. This project was started in 2002 and is expected to be completed by 2013. Yoshioka will present the one-tenth scale model at this exhibition. “Japanese views of nature are characterized by the way we see space. It is a feeling and energy which we sense from space. I think it is also connected to the Japanese tea ceremony. I wanted to communicate with nature by creating space with the artificial architecture, instead of directly communicating with nature”, Yoshioka says. via: excite/ism

MILAN DESIGN WEEK PART 2 (Canon Neoreal Wonder)
This is the 4th year since Canon participated in the Milan design week. This year they have collaborated with Torafu Architects, and visual design studioWOW. Milan design week part 1 (Hermès by Shigeru Ban)
Japanese architect collaborated with Jean de Gastines to create a paper house pavillion for Hermès. It is structured with cardboard tubes woven with paper. The paper tube structure (PTS) was originally developed in order to build inexpensive and recyclable houses after the Great Kobe Earthquake in 1995. Hermès is showing its brand new contemporary interiors collection for the first time at the Salone del Mobile.

NEOREAL WONDER 2011
Canon is planning to participate in Milano Salone del Mobile (April 12-17,2011) this year again.This year TORAFU ARCHITECTS and WOW are in charge of the exhibition.TORAFU ARCHITECTS will create a cone-shaped large screen in the main space by using nylon lines. The idea is to combine the screen and images and makes us feel that the screen is floating in the air.via: excite/ism

Gift for Frozen Village
Kyota Takahashi, whose work was exhibited at “CANON NEOREAL” last year in the Milan design week, will show his new art work titiled “Gift for Frozen Village” in Nigata, Japan. This is part of Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennial in 2011. 10,000 LED lights will be handed to the participants as “seeds” for the snow fields, and the artist and the participants will sow seeds together on the 26th and 27th of February. via: excite/ism

Romance at Tokyo Midtown
An exhibition by Japan Graphic Designers Association (JAGDA) titled “Romance” started at Tokyo midtown last week. This exhibition took place in Hong Kong last December as part of “Business of Design Week” and attracted over 50,000 visitors.Based on the theme “Romance” , they showed 30 second movies with 30 monitors. Shiro kuramata at 21_21 DESIGN SIGHT
Shiro Kuramata’s exhibition (Shiro Kuramata 1934–1991) started at 21_21 DESIGN SIGHT in Roppongi, Tokyo this week (until May 8th, 2011). Kuramata is considered one of the most important Japanese designers in the 20th century and has had a great influence on the modern product design. The exhibition shows 65 pieces of Kuramata’s work.

More trees
“More trees”, an organization committed to environmental protection (whose founder is musician Ryuichi Sakamoto) has started an exhibition at the AXIS gallery in Roppongi, Tokyo on October 27th. Ainojikan by Araki
A photo exhibition by Yoshinobu Araki will start at the Leica store in Ginza on September 3rd. The theme of the exhibition is “Ainojikan” or “Time for love”, and it shows 14 black and white photographs taken by Araki. “I was confident about framing time – instead of space. “Time for love” created by the relationship between a mother and a child or families….my photos are ‘time for love’”, Araki says.
