Takashi Sato at Salone Satellite (Milan Design Week-11)

I saw Takashi Sato’s products at Stockholm Furniture Fair in February this year, and thought that his coat hanger was one of the best at “Greenhouse”, which is equivalent to “Salone Satellite”. His design reminds me of typical Scandinavian design, which is getting quite popular in Japan in the recent years – Simple, clean, and minimalist. Coat hangers using another hanger as part of the structure. “SLED” stacking chair. Dining chairs. Tongs/Desk Light

LED clock by MILE design project (Milan Design Week-08)

This is my favorite Japanese design at Salone Satelite 2008 in Milan. It uses LED light, and the light indicates the time. Online Videos by Veoh.com MILE design project Design project mile was formed by Bandai Matsuo (acoustic engineer), Kentaro Kai (software engineer) and Kozo Shimoyama (interior designer) while they were still students at the University of Tsukuba. After they graduated from 2000 to 2003, they continued the project while becoming fully active in their own respective fields. They changed the name to MILE in 2008 and started working in full scale as a team. As “three heads are better than one” (the Chinese character for MILE can be read … Continue reading

Tokujin Yoshioka’ “Eternal” for Swarovski (Milan Design Week-07)

Swarovski’s exhibition in Zona Tortona is always one of the highlights of Milano Salone. I heard some people saying that it is not as good as they expected (I guess everyone has such a high expectation for Swarovski) This year I thought it was a nice exhibition – especially “Eternal” by Tokujin Yoshioka. All the designers who were invited to exhibit this year were big names such as Marcel Wanders (for some reason, there were three girls having shower in Wanders’s exhibition – and that seemed to be cliche and was not so impressive), Zaha Hadid, Fredrikson Stallard, but Tokujin Yoshioka’s exhibition stood out. Here is the press release of … Continue reading

Toshiyuki Kita (Milan Design Week-06)

Toshiyuki Kitas is one of the most respected Japanese product designers. Since he has been active both in Milan and Osaka, almost every year you can see his products at Milano Salone in April. He has designed so many important products in the history of design, but probably the most important contribution he has made is to revive the traditional Japanese design. This year in Milan he has shown his latest work which he designed with the help of Japanese producers. Here is the press release of his exhibition: KITA, NATURE AND TECHNOLOGY Two apparently opposite worlds, the meeting of two antipodes which, thanks to the power of design, are … Continue reading

Paper chairs by Junya Ishigami (Milan Design Week-05)

These chairs designed by Japanese architect Junya Ishigami were shown at Canon’s “NEOREAL” exhibition during Salone del mobile in Milan 2008. Although Canon’s first exhibition in Milan seemed lacking coherence with the mixture of traditional art, fashion, and modern design, these chairs by Junya Ishigami were very appealing to us. The following is the description by the creator: Despite having the strength to support the weight of a sitting person, these chairs project an impression of being as thin and fragile as paper. The beauty of the shading produced by the varying intensity of the drawings applied to these chairs, which serve as a canvas, mixes with the fineness of … Continue reading

Nendo with Lexus part 4 (Milan Design Week-04)

This is the 4th post on Nendo’s exhibition with Lexus, but I really think that it was one of the best at the fair this year, and it is probably the best among exhibitions related to Japanese design. This is the movie of another room, where the Lexus car was exhibited.
